as told by Paula Anderson
I moved to La Crosse in 2001 with my husband and one-year-old daughter so my husband could attend school. I got a job at a nursing home affiliated with Gundersen Lutheran.
I remember the first time my daughter got sick I wasn’t sure which clinic I would go to, having two to choose from. I chose Gundersen Lutheran and was very pleased with my decision. The staff and the doctors were great!
My husband and I decided to have another child. I had a C-section with my daughter, so scheduled one with my son. I gave birth to my son on Nov. 2. When I was wheeled to my room I was in a single bed and noticed, across the hall, there were king-sized beds for families to share. I asked why I could not have one and was told it was because I had surgery. If there were any complications and I needed to be moved, the single bed could be wheeled out of the room. I understood that precaution.
My husband stayed with me and our son in the room, but he had to sleep on a cot. On the second day of my stay, I was doing well...no complications from the surgery. A nurse came in and asked if I needed anything. I said, “You know how you go to a restaurant and you get seated in the middle of the room when you really wanted a window booth?” She said, “Yes.” I went on to say, “I would really prefer the room with a king-sized bed.” Within minutes I was moved across the hall. My husband, new baby and I not only shared a bed together, but we got to bond better.
During maternity leave I started applying for jobs at Gundersen Lutheran because of the great experience I had here. I got a job in Dermatology and could not be happier. This is such a wonderful place to be. My family members, who live about 70 miles away, now receive their healthcare here because of my great experience. All I can say is keep up the great work. We will always be proud of the Hospital and Clinic serving our community.
