Air Rescue
as told by Janet Yearous
A lot of our patients would agree that there are angels among us, often “disguised” in scrubs and lab coats. But angels can also be found in the most unexpected places. A case in point: Bill Trautner, who manages Gundersen Lutheran’s Valet Services.

For about a year now Bill has been giving out angel pins to all the new mothers and fathers, telling them the pins are for their little angels. In one case, he gave the parents three pins...for triplets. The new moms and dads really like it and are always grateful.

Bill also gives an angel pin to, in his words, “anyone having a tough time.” He adds, “The pin is a reminder that I’m thinking about them.” He says he has made a lot of friends through his gifting. Because he’s a good listener, people often open up to him, which is also a remarkable gift he shares with his customers.

Bill seems destined for his angel crusade. About a year-and-a-half ago, the 66-year-old was enjoying retirement after more than 30 years as a Minnesota state trooper. To stay in shape, he walked several miles a day, often passing by Gundersen Lutheran. One day, as he passed by, someone asked him if he wanted a job. Next thing Bill knew, he had a part-time job. Soon thereafter he was offered the job of managing Valet Parking and bumped to full time. A job, I might add, he tells me he loves.

Bill’s wife, Mary, brought home an angel pin for him one day and an idea was born. The modest man seems uncomfortable with the attention he is receiving. “It’s just something I like to do. It’s just the way I am. I’m selective about who I give them to. My heart has to feel right about it,” Bill says. Well he has a good heart because he’s given out well over a 100 pins so far. It was a little idea with such big impact, this gentle act of kindness.

So keep your eyes open. There are angels among us and you never know where you might meet the next one.
