as told by Carrie Maringer
I had been in and out of clinics and hospitals many times throughout my life trying different things to control my hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating. Seemingly, no one understood the meaning of the words, "It doesn't work!" when I complained that all the suggested treatments were not solving my problem.
Then my boss brought me an article from the La Crosse Tribune about a woman in Holmen, Wis., who had the same condition and found relief through a surgical procedure at Gundersen Lutheran called an endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy. Little did I know, there are many people out there who suffer from the same condition, but hide it the same way I did. This article literally brought tears to my eyes.
From this article, I found Dr. Leach. It felt as though he was my only hope! I was able to see him within one week and he set me up for surgery the following week. He treated me like a human being and understood what I was going through. I had the best experience with his staff, too. They were very kind and thoughtful, and they made sure the surgery would be covered by my insurance, which was a big concern.
I got married two months later and for the first time in my life I was able to shake hands with the most important people in my life without having to explain the sweating. Of course by now, my family all knew about it, but my in-laws did not. This surgery truly made my special day even more special. Dr. Leach and his staff made this possible and I am forever grateful.
